Dimapur Commissioner of Police Implements Speed Restrictions and Safety Measures to Ensure Public Safety

In response to the alarming rate of road traffic accidents caused by overspeeding in Dimapur, the Commissioner of Police, Kevithuto Sophie, has announced the imposition of speed limits on National Highway-29 up to Chümoukedima and within the Dimapur city area.

The newly enforced speed limits, effective from December 1 to December 31, are outlined in an order issued by CP Dimapur Kevithuto Sophie. The order cites authority under section 112 (2) of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, as amended by the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 2019.

The specified speed limits include 50 kilometers per hour (km/hr) from Zion Hospital junction to Chümoukedima, 30 km/hr within the Dimapur city area, and 50 km/hr from Chathe Bridge (Patkai/ Seithekema) towards Niuland district.

Violations of the imposed speed limits are subject to penalties under section 183 of the MV Act, according to the order. Read Also New Parking Regulations Announced by DMC: Changes Effective from December 1, 2023

In addition to speed restrictions, the Commissioner of Police issued a comprehensive advisory emphasizing public safety and convenience. Motorists are urged to adhere to prescribed speed limits, wear seat belts, and refrain from using mobile phones while driving.

The advisory also highlights offenses such as driving without protective headgear, using non-ISI graded helmets, and not fastening chin straps. It further cautions against driving under the influence of alcohol and stresses the importance of responsible parking.

To tackle traffic congestion, the advisory specifies designated parking spots and warns against parking violations, including towing away angular/haphazardly parked vehicles. Lane discipline, particularly for two and three-wheelers, is emphasized to avoid overtaking in existing lanes at traffic stops.

The advisory concludes by prohibiting unauthorized retrofits on vehicles, such as tinted glasses, bull bars, crash guards, beacon lights, or red/blue LED lights, and exhaust pipes/pressure horns. Unregistered vehicles operating without a temporary permit will face impoundment and legal action.

The public is urged to adhere to these traffic rules and regulations, as strict penalties will be enforced against offenders, with zero tolerance for traffic law violations. The measures aim to enhance road safety and reduce the incidence of accidents in Dimapur. Read Also Revised Schedule for Joint Inspection of Dimapur Bypass and Dimapur-Kohima 4-Lane National Highway
